Club Rafiki was created in 1974 by the Congregation of Dominican Fathers in Kigali city Rwanda.

In 1976 Club Rafiki settled down on a piece of land granted by the Rwandan government and in the course of the same year, the library, hall and subsidiary buildings were established. Basketball and volleyball playgrounds were established, while other construction followed in 1980 and 1986.

Club Rafiki was given its not-for-profit status in 1978. Tragically in 1994 most of the facilities were looted and demolished during the Rwandan Genocide.
